1.
The most important reason for attending Oktoberfest is the beer. A huge part of all the festivities that relate to the German culture is their ability to craft all kinds of delicious beer flavors. The best kinds of this refreshing beverage are most commonly served up in a traditional stein. -
2.
When you’re attending Oktoberfest, not only are you encouraged to drink, you are expected to do it all day long. Most of the beer tents open up as early as 9am and that’s when you get the good spots. If you are an early riser, you can get in ahead of the crowds and avoid the long lines. -
3.
Meet new people. Oktoberfest always draws in a huge crowd of people from all over the world. It could be the alcohol, or just the lack of space compared to the amount of guests, but you are sure to find yourself getting close and personal to those around you. You can never have too many friends at your table. -
4.
Besides Halloween, there aren’t many times throughout the year that you can get dressed up in a silly costume and feel okay about it. So, put on your fine hats, waistcoats, ribbons, and vintage jackets before heading out and you will fit right in with the rest of the crazy crowd. -
5.
Drinking songs. No matter where you look or which one of the dozens of tents that you travel to, you are going to see beer. In order to encourage you to try some of the new flavors even more (like you need more encouragement), there will be performers that sing various drinking songs all over the place that you won’t be able to resist joining in on. -
6.
Along with the traditional dinner time dishes, there will be a variety of desserts to try. Some of the most popular will include Lindt chocolate and dipped artisan pretzels. If sweet isn’t your thing, try something a little more savory with a German cheese dumpling dish or a filling wiener on a pretzel bun. -
7.
For those that love to chew on a big hunk of meat, you will not be disappointed. The vendors are known for roasting and smoking hundreds of pounds of meat in all different flavors from oxen to duck every year. -
8.
Visiting new places. If you're already there you can take a tour around the city, see some museums or landmarks; no one can accuse you of thinking only about beer after that. But remember even though there are going to be tons of hotels, motels, and other lodging areas located throughout the city and surrounding areas where you are planning to go, make sure to book your hotel way ahead of time. That way, when you have had enough of the fun in the streets, you can kick back and relax without having to drive anywhere. -
9.
Parades. There is almost always a giant parade that takes place at some point during the event. You will be able to grab a spot and watch a bit of German tradition and culture walk right past you. Make it a point to check the event schedule for the time and get there early enough to guarantee a good seat. -
10.
The After Party. Due to local laws and regulations, many of the beer tents have to close down at a specific time. That doesn’t mean that you have to stop partying though. Look out for after parties at bars and other establishments in the area. They will be advertised or you can just ask your new found friends.
